16-Core Windows Server Licensing

Windows Server Standard is licensed by physical core when using the traditional physical-core licensing model. Microsoft requires all physical cores on the licensed server to be covered, subject to a minimum of 8 core licences per physical processor and a minimum of 16 core licences per server.

A 16-core pack therefore covers the minimum core requirement for a server with up to 16 physical cores, provided the server configuration also meets Microsoft’s per-processor minimums. Servers with more than 16 physical cores require additional core licences.

Standard Edition Virtualisation Rights

When all physical cores on the server are properly licensed, Windows Server 2022 Standard provides rights to run up to two Operating System Environments (OSEs) or two Windows Server containers with Hyper-V isolation. Additional virtualisation rights require additional licensing in accordance with Microsoft’s licensing rules.

For current licensing details, see the Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Licensing Guide.

What the 5 User CALs Provide

A Windows Server User CAL does not contain the server software itself. It grants one assigned user the right to access appropriately licensed Windows Server software. A User CAL is useful when one person needs access from several devices, such as a desktop, laptop and tablet.

This package includes five User CALs. If more than five users require access to the server, additional User CALs will normally be required. Microsoft also offers Device CALs for environments where multiple users share the same licensed device.

Microsoft’s current CAL guidance is available on its Client Access Licensing guidance.

Business Workloads and Server Features

Windows Server 2022 Standard is designed for professional server environments and supports services such as Active Directory Domain Services, centralised file storage, print services, DNS, DHCP and compatible business applications.

It also includes Hyper-V technology and security capabilities designed for modern server deployments. Available features and hardware-dependent protections can vary by server configuration, so compatibility should be checked before deployment.

Who This Package Is For

Windows Server 2022 Standard 16 Core + 5 User CALs is suitable for small businesses, professional offices and IT environments that need a 16-core Windows Server licence together with access rights for five named users.

If your organisation needs more user access, you can add additional Windows Server User CALs. If your server has more than 16 physical cores or you plan to run additional virtual machines, additional core licensing may also be required.

Digital Delivery

This is a digitally delivered software licence product. After payment confirmation, the licence information and installation or activation guidance are sent electronically. No physical disc or boxed product is shipped.

Please review your server hardware, required number of users and intended virtualisation setup before purchase to ensure the licensing configuration is appropriate for your environment.

If you need the server licence without bundled CALs, see our Windows Server 2022 Standard 16 Core License. You can then add the number of User CALs required for your organisation.
