How to Activate Your Windows or Office License Key: Step-by-Step Guide

Bought a digital license key and not sure what to do with it? Activation only takes a few minutes once you know where to click. This guide walks through activating both Windows and Office keys, plus what to do if something doesn’t go through on the first try.

Before you start

Make sure you have your license key handy (usually a 25-character code, delivered by email after purchase), and that your PC is connected to the internet, since activation needs to reach Microsoft’s servers to verify the key.

Activating a Windows license key

If Windows is already installed on your PC and you just need to activate it with a new key:

Click the Start menu and open Settings.

Go to System, then scroll down to Activation.

Click Change product key.

Enter your 25-character key exactly as provided, then click Next.

Windows will verify the key and confirm activation. You’ll see “Windows is activated” under the Activation section once it’s done.

If you’re installing Windows fresh on a new or reformatted PC, you’ll be prompted to enter the product key during setup, right after selecting your language and keyboard layout. If setup skips that step, you can also choose “I don’t have a product key” and activate afterward using the steps above once Windows finishes installing.

Activating an Office license key (Office Home & Business, Pro Plus, or Microsoft 365)

Go to office.com/setup in your browser and sign in with the Microsoft account you want the license tied to (create a free Microsoft account first if you don’t already have one).

Enter your 25-character product key when prompted.

Follow the prompts to download the Office installer, then run it.

Once installation finishes, open any Office app (Word, for example) and sign in with the same Microsoft account. Office will automatically recognize your license and activate.

For Microsoft 365 subscriptions specifically, activation is tied to your Microsoft account rather than a one-time key entry — once you’re signed in with the account the subscription is linked to, the apps activate automatically.

Common activation issues and fixes

“This key doesn’t work” or “invalid key” errors are usually caused by a typo. Double-check you’re entering the key exactly as it appears, since 0 (zero) and O (letter), or 1 (one) and I (letter), are easy to mix up. Most activation screens let you paste the key directly, which avoids this problem entirely.

“This key has already been used” can happen if a key was accidentally activated more than once, or activated on a different device already. If you’re activating a key you purchased and this message appears, contact support with your order details so it can be checked and resolved.

Activation says “connect to the internet” but you are online: this is usually a temporary issue reaching Microsoft’s activation servers. Try again after a few minutes, or restart your PC and retry.

Windows shows activated but Office doesn’t, or vice versa: these are two separate activations. Windows activation and Office activation are independent of each other, so you’ll need to complete both steps if you purchased both.

After activation

Once activated, both Windows and Office will periodically re-verify your license in the background, which happens automatically and doesn’t require any action from you. Keep your original purchase confirmation email in case you ever need to reinstall on the same device or reach out for support.
